For many years, Initiatives of Change, in partnership with several other peacebuilding groups, has been organizing various activities to celebrate the UN-designated International Day of Peace.

As in previous years, Mayor Denis Coderre of Montreal, representatives of several organizations and some prominent personalities met at City Hall to celebrate the values of peace and diversity. Among them were singer Gregory Charles, well known here for his contribution for peace, Brian Bronfman, President of the Family Foundation that supports peace, the President of Concordia University, the Director General of Dawson College; also the Directors of the YMCA and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

In his speech, the mayor stressed the importance of working together on peace initiatives so that Montreal can be a city that inspires other regions of Canada. The event was also an opportunity for the city to recognize the work of local organizations that promote peace.

Another activity took place just outside the busy Mont-Royal metro station. People were asked to share their thoughts orally or in writing about the effects of the 17 sustainable development goals identified by the UN. Ideas were collected from over 200 people from different generations and backgrounds.

For IofC, this special day was once again an opportunity to share our experiences with people from different backgrounds and to strengthen partnerships with other organizations and peace networks.
