Using values as a compass for inner listening

A simple way to begin inner listening is to set aside 5-10 minutes of quiet time with a notebook and pen. As thoughts, ideas, concerns, reminders, or insights come to mind, write them down without judging or filtering them. The goal is not to force answers, but to listen attentively and create space for reflection.

Afterward, review what you have written through the lens of a set of values that can help distinguish deeper guidance from impulse, fear, or ego. These values have long been used within Initiatives of Change as a personal compass.

  • Honesty

Being truthful with ourselves and others. Honesty invites us to recognize reality as it is, rather than as we would like it to be. It asks:

Am I being truthful in my words, actions, and relationships?

  • Purity

Acting from our highest motives rather than being driven by fear, insecurity, ego, or unhealthy desires. Purity encourages clarity of purpose and integrity in decision-making.

  • Unselfishness

Seeking fairness, justice, and the common good. Unselfishness challenges us to look beyond our own interests and consider the needs of others and the wider community.

  • Love

Responding with compassion, goodwill, and forgiveness. Love lies at the heart of all values and encourages us to build understanding, heal divisions, and care for others.

These values are not standards that anyone perfectly achieves. Rather, they serve as a guide, much like a compass or the North Star, helping us navigate life’s decisions and relationships.

During quiet reflection, many people find it helpful to ask:

  • What am I being called to pay attention to?
  • Is there something I need to change, repair, or make right?
  • Am I acting in a way that is honest, pure, unselfish, and loving?
  • What practical step can I take today?

Inner listening is not only about reflection. It is also about action. The insights gained through silence become meaningful when they are translated into everyday choices, relationships, and service to others. Many people find that regularly making time for silence, reflection, writing, and action brings greater clarity, purpose, and peace.
