National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Datum

In anticipation of the September 30, 2023 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada, there was a ‘Sharing our Cultures’ event on September 10 at the historic McDougall Stoney Mission Church, close to the Stoney Nakoda Nation in Southern Alberta.

Local Indigenous, Metis and Scottish cultures were showcased in a vision to share and celebrate Alberta’s history and to reflect on the story of the McDougall Stoney Mission and the Stoney Nakoda people, not forgetting the horrific experiences of many students in residential schools, but to inspire others to follow in the path of peace and mutual respect amongst all peoples.

Walking Buffalo’s grand-daughter and great grand-daughter were present. Clarice Kootenay was asked to speak during the ceremony: “My grandfather, Walking Buffalo, talked about healing and reconciliation long ago. He and other Indigenous leaders carried this message around the world. The four values of MRA/IofC, absolute honesty, love, unselfishness, and purity of heart, are our Stoney values. We are here in reconciliation for the better, we are here for the future. We are honoured to share with you today.”
